Country and people  > Animal welfare

As everywhere in southern countries a lot of cats and dogs can be seen in the streets. Especially in rural areas cats are very welcome to live around the house in order to avoid other annoying animals to move in as subtenants. The apparently free living pets are often clearly related to an owner, but due to the open construction and the village structures where everybody knows everybody, for the tourist it is not easy to recognize if it is a stray animal or if the pet has a home. Before simply taking a pet along, one should carefully ask neighbours if there is really no owner. Due to the fact that a lot of pets live “free” and are not castrated they breed accordingly and indeed there are young animals, left on their own from the overstrained owners. Who wants to take back home an acquaintance he got fond of it should think about very carefully. Detailed information about further questions (transport, vaccination etc.) you find on the site of Arche Noah.
