From the age of four children go to a prenursery school (pronipio), then at the
age of
five to a kindergarten (nipio) and from the age of six to primary school (dimotiko),
lasting until the age of 12 years. In the vicinity (i.e. in Malia) for some time there is the model of a whole-day school, children stay at school over midday and should do their homework already at school. School ends at about 16.00. For all pupils the attendance of the lower grades of secondary school (gymnasio is obligatory (from about 13 years up 15). Other types of school do not exist. After the gymnasio compulsory education is over. Those who want to get admission to go to university have to attend upper school (lyceo) for another three years. Nearly all children take private lessons besides school, learning foreign languages or indulging in a hobby. In the summer months there are three months’ school holidays and for parents, working in tourism it is a big problem to look after their children during this period, because not everybody has relatives living around who can assume this duty.
