Greece covers a total area of 131 957 km2 (about 20% of it are islands). Crete is the biggest Greek island with a total area of 8335 km2. The total population of Greece is about 10,56 million inhabitants, 98% of them are Greek. Official language is (modern) Greek, but there are also many different dialects in Greece. On Crete especially in rural areas there is Cretan dialect spoken (which could be compared with Bavarian and standard German) and therefore it may happen that a person from Athens is not always able to understand a Cretan. The political system is a parliamentary republic (since 1973) based on a constitution from 1975. General electoral duty starts at the age of 18 years. On election days public sale of alcoholic drinks is forbidden (apart from tourist areas). One is exercising his right vote at his place of birth (just imagine the exodus on election days…) Statistically on every 1000 inhabitants there are little less than 500 TV sets, about 80 PC’s and 14 Internet connections The annual visitor number amounts to 12,5 million tourists.
