Here you find a general idea about the most important authorities and their office hours. At the same time there is the opportunity to get a first glimpse of every day’s life for those who intend to stay here on a long-term base, because also here there are some hurdles to take if one is intending to settle his matters correctly.

Public authorities: Reduced office hours. Generally from Monday to Friday 07.30 – 15.00 (call before)

  OTE Organisation for telecommunications
In the OTE offices you effect your calls at official rate. It is usual that hotels charge supplements up to 50%.
Alternative: prepaid cards are available in almost all supermarkets and kiosks. The location of call boxes you find on the village map.

Now as before it takes a while to get a subscriber’s line. Many people use mobile phones with prepaid cards (available in supermarkets and kiosks).

Next telephone offices are in Malia and Hersonissos

ELTA Post office
You find post boxes everywhere on the street. Stamps usually are sold wherever you can buy postcards.

Letters and postcards to abroad are automatically sent by airmail. Nearly all post offices accept poste restante. Picking up poste restante is possible on presentation of passport or identity card.

  DEH (de-i) Power-supply company
Stalida is supplied with electricity by a big power station outside Heraklion. Especially in summer months there are accidental overloads and this causes punctual power failures (most big hotel resorts have an emergency generator at their disposal). This is also the season when special-purpose vehicles go around and clean the capacitors at the poles with water pressure from saline deposits and dust to avoid flying sparks.

You surely will have the chance to hear this crackling during your stay.

Every 2 months there is a payment on account (enanti) and every 4 months a final account (katharistiko). These bills also include general charges (Streetlights, Radio, TV).

Supply voltage 220 V, 50 Hz, round, bipolar plugs.

  DEYAM Waterworks
As meanwhile all over the world, also on Crete water is a very precious good. We’d like to point out, that also during your holiday (not only back home), there should be no senseless or lavish use of water. Many hotels, which are engaged in environment protection, animate their guests to support this engagement by not automatically changing towels daily and leaving the decision up to the guest, when fresh towels are necessary.

Quality of drinking water is very good here and tap water can safely be used to cook, to brush one’s teeth and so on. In the area there are also some places to bottle water, so i.e. at Krassi (a village worth seeing with a gigantic plane tree).

The waterworks are located in Malia (soccer field) gpolic@tee.gr
